World League - Day 6: Boyer, Clevenot guide France to stay on course, Slovenia and Spain suffer first losses

Stephen Boyer has led France in scoring in three occasions in their 5-0 unbeaten run in the 2017 FIVB Volleyball World League

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 10, 2017 – Former champions France remained on course with its fifth straight win in Group 1 of the 2017 FIVB Volleyball World League, as Stephen Boyer and Trevor Clevenot made a blazing performance against European neighbours Italy in a four-set clash.

Boyer had another productive night for France, as he scored 20 points, including 17 attacks, one block and two aces; then Clevenot added 15 markers. Julien Lyneel and Nicolas Le Goff also subsidised the French win, scoring in double-figures.

Their current five-match winning streak in the competition is their best since they were victorious in their first 15 fixtures of the 2015 edition.

France have won their last six World League matches against Italy since May 2012. However, Italy still holds the advantage in number of victories in their 41 encounters in World League history. Italy claimed 24 wins, while France had 17.

These two teams recently met at world level on August 7, when Italy recorded a straight-set win over France at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games preliminary round.

Meanwhile, Slovenia and Spain suffered their first losses after a 4-0 start in Groups 2 and 3, respectively. Slovenia lost to Japan in a five-set encounter in Takasaki, while Spain bowed down to Germany in straight sets in Linz.

Group 1

France and the United States claimed their second victories in Pau. The European squad remain as the only unbeaten team in all groups, after undefeated squads Slovenia and Spain suffered their first losses in Groups 2 and 3 on Saturday, respectively. France now hold a 5-0 win-record, while USA are on a two-match winning streak after losing all their matches last week in Novi Sad.

In the highlight clash of champions, Olympic champions Brazil are still ranked second in Group 2 after their commanding performance against world champions Poland. Renan Buiatti led with 18 attacks to lead the Brazilian offence in their 3-1 triumph. Still in Varna, Canada got away with three two-point margin set victories in their four-set match against Bulgaria. John Gordon Perrin had an outstanding performance on offence with 24 points, while his compatriot Graham Vigrass took care of their defence with seven blocks.

Belgium went on another five-set match in Tehran, but this time they made sure they gained the favour, as five of their players scored in double digits to earn the 3-2 win against Argentina. Sam Deroo and Tomas Rousseaux led Belgium with 19 and 17 points, respectively, while Simon Van De Voorde made seven stuff blocks. In the other match, defending champions Serbia outscored hosts Iran from the attack and service lines to win the match, but the former gave away a set from their errors.

Group 2

The match of Japan and Slovenia at Takasaki went down to the wire, with the hosts gaining a slim 17-15 win in the tie-breaker. Slovenia are still in the top spot in Group 2 despite suffering their first loss in this edition, while Japan move to fifth place with a 3-2 record. The earlier match between Turkey and Korea also went into a fifth set, with the Asian side prevailing 15-12 in the tie-breaker – quite a reversal of fortune for Korea after they lost 15-12 to Slovenia in the fifth set on Friday.

In Helsinki, Slovakia and China were evenly matched in attack, but the European side’s 21 blocks helped in their four-set triumph. Peter Ondrovic was colossal at the net as he deflected nine Chinese attacks. Marcel Lux also had five blocks out of his 19 points. Australia won the Helsinki leg with three victories. Australia’s latest victims were hosts Finland in a four-set match. The Australians managed to contain Finnish opposite Urpo Sivula, while their captain Paul Carroll delivered the goods on offence with 22 points.

In Ceske Budejovice, Egypt got redemption and finally registered a win, after losing their five-setter to Czech Republic on Friday. The African team came up with a five-set triumph at the expense of Portugal. After losing all its matches last weekend, the Netherlands are on a roll with two wins. Their latest victory is against host Czech Republic in straight sets.
