After a 10-year absence, Greece rejoined the FIVB World League in 2015 and will be making their overall 13th appearance in the competition. Last year Greece got a shot at promotion to Group 2, but lost to Slovenia 3-1 in the Group 3 semifinals (before defeating Chinese Taipei 3-1 for third place in the group and 27th overall). Greece’s best World League performance was fifth place in 2004. Greece had qualified for the Final Eight a year earlier, but ranked joint seventh after losing all three pool play matches.
Greece have only competed in the Olympic Games as hosts in Athens 2004, ranking ninth after narrowly missing out on a quarterfinal spot. Greece have taken part in the FIVB World Championships five times, making it to the quarterfinals in 1994 when they hosted the event and eventually ranked sixth. Greece also made the quarterfinals in 2002.
The highest moment for Greece was in 1987, when they won the bronze medal at the European Championship in Ghent, losing to the Soviet Union 3-0 in the semifinals but defeating Sweden 3-2 for third place. They have not qualified for the European Championships since 2009.
