Overview

Team profile

Mexico

Mexico first took part in the FIVB World League in 2014, but have only scored a total of three wins in as many appearances since. Mexico were present at the 2014 FIVB World Championship in Poland, but with a solitary win against Egypt they did not make it out of pool play and finished 17th. Their best World Championship ranking in five appearances was 10th place in 1974 when they hosted the event.
Long in the shadow of regional powerhouses USA and Cuba, and to a lesser extent Canada, Mexico’s international record stretches back to 1955 when they took the silver medal at the Pan American Games in Mexico City, losing only to USA in the round-robin competition. They also won bronze at the 1959 and 1975 editions of the Pan American Games. More recently they missed a chance at climbing on the podium again, when they lost to Argentina 3-2 in the bronze medal match of the 2011 Pan American Games. Mexico were runners-up three times in the NORCECA Championships, in 1969, 1975 and 1977 and have bronze medals from the 1971 and 1979 editions of the competition. At the 2016 Olympic Games, Mexico made their second Olympic appearance (since Mexico City 1968), but finished pool play winless and ranked joint 11th
