Mexico first took part in the FIVB World League in 2014, but have only scored a total of three wins in as many appearances since. Mexico were present at the 2014 FIVB World Championship in Poland, but with a solitary win against Egypt they did not make it out of pool play and finished 17th. They also won bronze at the 1959 and 1975 editions of the Pan American Games. More recently they missed a chance at climbing on the podium again, when they lost to Argentina 3-2 in the bronze medal match of the 2011 Pan American Games. Mexico were runners-up three times in the NORCECA Championships, in 1969, 1975 and 1977 and have bronze medals from the 1971 and 1979 editions of the competition.
