Ibrahim Fakhreldin returns this year to the men’s national team of Egypt to replace Sherif El Shemerly. He had previously led Egypt at the 2014 FIVB World Championship following stints in the late 1990s and early 2000s, including at the Sydney 2000 Olympics. At club level, the 63-year-old was coach of Cairo’s Al-Ahly for over three decades and has led the team to numerous league titles and African Club Championships. As a player he was in the Egypt team that competed in the Montreal 1976 Olympics before they withdrew as part of the African boycott. His last mission was leading the women’s national team who ranked second in the African qualifiers for the Rio 2016 Olympics.
