Qatar made their debut in the FIVB World League only last year but quickly caused a sensation in Group 3, ending up with a 3-3 record, including wins over more established opponents as Greece, Puerto Rico and Tunisia.
Qatar first appeared at the Asian Championship in 1989, when they finished in 19th place, followed by progressively improving finishes. Their best ever showing was in 2015, when they homed in on a podium finish in Tehran, but lost their semifinal 3-1 to Japan and the bronze medal match to China 3-2.
Qatar also finished fourth at the 2006 Asian Games which they hosted in Doha, after dropping their semifinal 3-1 to Korea and the bronze medal match 3-2 to Saudi Arabia. They have never qualified for any other FIVB competition.
