Leading up to 2016, Germany were coming off one of the most successful periods in their history after finishing fifth at the London 2012 Olympic Games and reaching the final round of the FIVB World League for the first time in 2012 – also placing fifth – before capturing bronze at the 2014 FIVB World Championship. But after missing the 2015 season of the World League (to focus on the European Games where they won gold in Baku, Azerbaijan), they rejoined the competition in 2016 in Group 3. They also failed to qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games at the European qualifiers at home in Berlin. Germany’s attempt at immediate promotion to Group 2 last year was in vain, as they lost the group’s final 3-1 at home in Frankfurt to Slovenia.
Germany have two appearance at the Olympic Games, with a ninth place in Beijing 2008 and a fifth in London 2012. Before reunification, the former East Germany finished fourth in Mexico City 1968 before winning the silver medal in Munich 1972. Former East Germany were also crowned world champions in 1969 and clinched the FIVB World Cup a year later. Since reunification, Germany twice reached the medals round at the European Championship
