World League - Day 5: Boyer sizzles anew in France's unbeaten run, Slovenia and Spain lead Groups 2 & 3

 

Stephen Boyer once again led France to defeat Russia in the 2017 FIVB Volleyball World League

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 9, 2017 – Stephen Boyer once again stepped up on scoring with 20 points to extend France’s unbeaten start in the 2017 FIVB Volleyball World League Group 1, while Slovenia and Spain kept their clean win-records to top Groups 2 and 3, respectively.

In Pau, Boyer led France to a 3-1 (25-12, 22-25, 25-21, 25-18) home win over Russia. In their meeting last weekend, Boyer was also the top scorer in their four-set triumph over Russia with 18 points.

France have emphasised their dominance over Russia in the World League with seven victories in 12 encounters. France became the first team to win three times in a row against Russia in the World League, following their 3-0 triumph in 2016 and the 3-1 win last weekend.

Meanwhile, Tine Urnaut steered Slovenia as they prevailed in their first-ever five-set match in the World League. Urnaut top scored with 23 points in their 3-2 (25-20, 23-25, 25-13, 24-26, 15-12) win over Korea and stay unbeaten in Group 2.

After earning three home wins in Barcelona, Spain fortified their bid in the World League with another win in Linz. The Spaniards endured the tough challenge of the Mexicans to win 3-2 (23-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-19, 15-9) in Group 3.

Group 1

France kept their status as the only unbeaten team in Group 1 after they came up with their fourth win in Pau. France collected their 12th point in the competition, following their victory over Russia in four sets. In the other match on Friday, the United States were back on its feet as they posted a 3-0 win against European powerhouse Italy to claim their first win in the 2017 World League.

Brazil improved their win-loss record to 3-1 and are in second position in Group 1, following their 3-1 win over Canada in Varna, Bulgaria. The home team led by scoring sensation Tsvetan Sokolov delighted their home fans with a tie-break win over world champions Poland.

Serbia are in third place in Group 1 as they opened the second week campaign with a straight-set win over Argentina in Tehran. Iran made back-to-back wins after they bolted from a tough 3-2 encounter with Belgium.

Group 1 competition will continue on June 10 with tournaments taking place in Varna (Bulgaria), Tehran (Iran) and Pau (France).

Slovenia took the top spot in Group 2 with their exciting 3-2 win over Korea in Takasaki. The Slovenians are undefeated in four matches. In the other match, hosts Japan handed Turkey its first loss in the 2017 World League after a convincing 3-1 triumph.

In Helsinki, Australia and Finland have already recorded two victories. Australia came up with a strong performance and defeated Slovakia 3-1, while Finland produced a 3-1 win against China, with Urpo Sivula in the forefront of their offence.

The Netherlands and the Czech Republic recovered from their previous losses and succeeded in their first matches in Ceske Budejovice. The Netherlands trounced the Portugal with a 3-1 win, while the Czech Republic needed five sets to overcome Egypt.

Group 2 competition action in Helsinki (Finland), Takasaki (Japan) and Ceske Budejovice (Czech Republic) will progress on June 10.

Venezuela counted on their well-balanced attack to outplay Greece in four sets in Estonian city Talinn. The host team led on all fronts to command a straight-set win over Qatar. Estonia now have a 3-1 win-record, while Venezuela improved to 2-2.

After losing 3-1 in Bijelo Polje, Chinese Taipei exacted their revenge against Montenegro in a four-setter in Tunis. Chinese Taipei were outscored by Montenegro in attacks, but the former performed better in blocking, serving and had fewer errors than the latter. In the other match, Kazakhstan closed the Day 5 competition with their first win in the 2017 World League. The Kazakhs defeated the Tunisian hosts in four sets.

Spain continued with their great run to remain as the only unbeaten team in Group 3. Spain were down 2-1 in the match, when Daniel Rocamora Blazquez stepped on the gas pedal to lead his squad in the tie-breaker against Mexico. Austria defeated Germany in the main header at Linz. The hosts outplayed their neighbours on offence and had fewer turnovers to come up with a win in four sets.
