In their third five-setter in four outings, Bulgaria managed to win the last two matches. The Bulgarians lost their first tie-break match to Argentina, but bounced back in the next two matches against Russia and world champions Poland.

“It is really an important win for us, but this is only the start of the tournament,” said Sokolov on their latest victory over Poland. “Now it is time to rest and prepare for our next opponent Canada.”

Ahmed Abdelhay of Egypt had a prolific stint on the service line with seven aces against Czech Republic, but his team lost with a very slim margin in the tie-break set, making them last in Group 2 standing.
