At the top of the list of the most effective spiker among the twelve teams in Group 1 is Frenchman Julien Lyneel, who had an outstanding success rate of 65.96 per cent from the attack line. He was also the best server and a key player for the 2015 World League winners to finish the first weekend of Group 1 as the only team with three victories.

Lyneel feels euphoric with the result and his superb performance as he topped two skill categories in the group.

Brazil’s Ricardo Lucarelli was the best digger, while team-mate Mauricio Silva exceled as the best receiver on the opening weekend, making Brazil as the only team with players dominating in three of the seven statistical rankings.

Also making a big surprise in the tournament are Belgium and Canada, which started their 2017 campaigns with two victories.

The star of the Belgian team is Bram van den Dries, who is third in the list of top scorers with 59 points. Also making waves in the statistical rankings is Canadian playmaker Tyler Sanders, who is second in the best setter list behind Italian star Simone Gianelli.

Two Russian players – Denis Biriukov and Ilia Vlasov – topped the list of best blockers with a figure of 0.92 blocks.

China’s Chuang Jiang joined the ‘Over 30’ scoring club as he surpassed the 30-point mark, scoring a total of 32 against Turkey. Despite Jiang’s scoring effort, China still lost in a five-set battle against the European squad.

Jiang tallied 65 points, settling as the second best scorer in Group 2, behind Turkey’s Metin Toy, who collected 67 markers in three matches.

Turkey have won all three matches to start a positive Group 2 campaign, while Slovakia and newly promoted Slovenia have also swept their matches.

Slovakia’s Peter Ondrovic emerged as the best server in the group, while Slovenia relied more on teamwork in earning their victories.

Andres Villena contributed 50 points to Spain’s success in all three matches to emerge as the best scorer in Group 3. Villena edged Mexico’s Daniel Vargas with only three points in the best scorer category.

Germany are also undefeated in the tournament and have two players leading in two statistical categories. Tim Broshog surfaced as the best blocker with an outstanding 1.09 blocks – the best blocking figure in all three groups. Simon Hirsch was best server in all three groups with 0.73 aces.

Germany coach Andrea Giani is hopeful that his team will continue to improve in the coming weeks.
