Slovenia attacks against the Czech Republic on Sunday
Seoul, Korea, June 4, 2017 –
Alan Sket’s 21 points led Slovenia to a 3-1 (25-19, 25-21, 23-25, 25-16) victory over the Czech Republic at Jangchung Arena in Seoul on Sunday.
Sket fired down three of Slovenia’s nine service aces to ensure his team would remain unbeaten after their three matches in the Korean capital.
Michael Finger was the top scorer for the Czech Republic with 13 points. The Czechs had the edge in blocks (12-6) and errors (21-27) but were still outgunned by the Slovenians, who were playing without captain
Tine Urnaut.
The Czechs leave Korea with a 1-2 record.
Mitja Gasparini led Slovenia in the first two sets, scoring seven points in the first set and four in the second. After a solid start by the Czechs, an ace by
Gregor Ropret put Slovenia 10-9 ahead and they gradually pulled away to 20-15 before sealing the set.
The second set was also a tight one but Slovenia pulled away from 12-12 to 15-12 to put themselves in the driving seat.
Slovenia should have been home and dry in the third set as they led 23-20, but an ace by
Vladimir Sobotka and two Slovenian errors levelled the scores at 23. Finger then came up with two massive blocks to bring the Czechs back into the match at 1-2.
But that was as good as it was going to get for the Czechs as Slovenia regrouped and were five points ahead at 16-11, the only interruption coming when a red card was handed out to a Slovenian coach. When Sobotka netted a serve, it was all over and Slovenia kept their unbeaten record.
