Passier, Roberts team-up for Australia’s sweep of Slovakia

 

Australia celebrate their straight-set win over Slovakia in the FIVB Volleyball World League in Helsinki, Finland

Helsinki, Finland, June 9, 2017 – Australia’s seasoned players Travis Passier and Nathan Roberts showed excellent leadership in their 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-23) win over Slovakia in Group 2 of the 2017 FIVB Volleyball World League at Hartwall Arena on Friday.

Passier and Roberts combined for 23 points to the Australian victory. Their team-mates Luke Smith and Lincoln Alexander Williams added 11 and 10 points, respectively. On the opposing side, it was only Peter Mlynarcik that produced a double-digit output of 15 points.

Australia avenged their 3-1 loss to Slovakia in the World League on June 3.

Australia started the first set strongly and took control of the game leading at 8-5 and 16-14. Slovakia could not find any solution to stop Australia and allowed the latter to seize the set at 25-21.



Williams’ three service aces helped Australia to a great start in the second set, while Slovakia encountered more problems when their libero Martin Turin injured his hand. Matej Patak had to play libero as Slovakia’s second libero Frantisek Ogurcak was also injured.

Slovakia still fought well and was only one point behind at 17-16. Australia made a strong finish at 25-19 to lead 2-0 in the match.

Slovakia fought in every rally in the third set that resulted to multiple deadlocks until 22-all. Australia stuck to their game plan and managed to seize the set and match at 25-23.
