Luke Smith began playing volleyball at Aquinas College in 2005 at the age of 16, playing in the Western Australian Schools Cup and National Schools Cup competition. He represented the Western Australian State under 17, 19, and 21 teams over his junior volleyball years. In 2008, he represented Western Australia Senior men’s team in the Australian Volleyball League and was awarded Most Valuable Player at the age of 18.
In 2009, he accepted an Australian Institute of Sport scholarship and represented Australia at Junior level for both Indoor & Beach Volleyball including a top 5 place at the World Junior Beach Volleyball Championships, Blackpool UK.
The following year Luke began his professional indoor volleyball career with Linkoping Volleyball Club (LVC), Sweden.
After returning to Australia in 2011 from Sweden, he made the Australian Senior Men’s team where they were able to qualify for the World Olympic Qualification Tournament (Tokyo 2012, Japan) by securing 4th place at the Asian Championships (Tehran, Iran).
Post national team, Luke returned to LVC where they had an undefeated season winning the Swedish League Cup and Swedish Championship.
Returning to Australian National Team again in 2012, the Volleyball Team Australia Men’s (VTAM) qualified for the London 2012 Summer Olympics. Luke was part of the Australian team in London that defeated Poland.
He then went and played the club season for teams Café Aiello Corigliano (Italy) and also LVC.
In 2013, Luke sustained setbacks including injury that halted his Australian national team campaign, later to play club volleyball for EuroSitex Pribram (Czech Republic) where they achieved a Silver medal in the Czech League Cup.
Luke participated in the 2014 World Championship in Poland and the 2015 World League.
He has been played for Hurrikaani Loimaa (Finland) over the last two seasons.
