Wallace and Lucas carry Brazil to gold medal match over USA

Wallace helped Brazil to yet another entrance at a World League final match

Curitiba, Brazil, July 7, 2017 - Hosts Brazil gained access to their fourth FIVB Volleyball World League final match in five years after they defeated USA 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 25-20, 25-19) with a superb output of Wallace De Souza and Lucas Saatkamp, star players with 18 and 13 points respectively on Friday’s opener at the Finals in Curitiba.

Behind Wallace and Lucas, wing-spiker Mauricio Silva was highly efficient and contributed with 12 points. However, the game’s top scorer was in USA side as Taylor Sander gathered 20 points, but those weren’t enough for the upset. Thomas Jaeschke added 12 for the losing side.

The win placed Brazil on a decisive World League match for the 16th time of their history, having won 9 out of the previous 15. 2014 champions USA already improved their 5th place from last year and now they will go for bronze.

Brazil rapidly took control of the board on the first set, countering USA’s efforts with a solid performance on block-defence and a very low error rate. With Muagututia on court, the visiting side gained new vibes and the game got leveled, but it was only a wake up for Brazil as they immediately regained their best shape. Wallace kept going, Lucas guaranteed points down the middle and the Arena Da Baixada got louder than ever with the final point of the 3-1.
