Middle blocker David Smith was born in Panorama City, Calif., and
raised in Saugus. Smith joined the U.S. National Team in 2009. In 2012, he was
a backup middle blocker on the silver medal-winning World League as well as the
Olympic team. He played in the World Championship in 2014 and helped the US win
World League bronze and World Cup gold in 2015. In 2016 he won the Olympic
bronze medal. He played college volleyball for UC Irvine. In 2007, he helped
Irvine win the NCAA National Championship. He was named to the NCAA
All-Tournament Team. He was named first team All-American and led the nation
with a .559 hitting percentage, a new UCI season record. Smith played for the
2004 and '05 U.S. junior national teams. He also played on the 2007 World University
Games team that won a bronze medal. David was born with mild-to-severe hearing
loss. He wears hearing aids to assist him on and off the court. His wife's name
is Kelli. They have a son named Cohen born in 2012. Smith has played
professionally in Poland, Spain and France.
