Although they still have some way to go, Iran have been continuously on the rise over the past few years, including their first ever appearance in a World League finals in 2014 (where they finished in a fourth place after a loss to Italy in the bronze medal match) and their first ever Olympics at Rio 2016, where they ranked fifth.
Since joining the World League in 2013, Iran have been a dominant force in Group 1 of the competition, providing a challenge for any opponent. This year will be their fourth straight participation.
Iran have featured in the past three FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championships and were sixth at the 2014 edition in Poland, where a strong Russian side defeated them in the final round. They also defeated Japan to win the gold medal at the Asian Games in Incheon, Korea in 2014. In the 2016 FIVB Volleyball World League, Iran finished on a 4-5 record, failing to make the Final Six in Krakow
