Alen Sket and Slovenia win first-ever match against Portugal

 

Alen Sket spikes the ball past several defenders from Portugal

Cairo, Egypt, June 18, 2017 – Impressive serving by Alen Sket helped Slovenia defeat Portugal 3-1 (25-16, 25-21, 23-25, 25-19). It was the first match between the two teams in FIVB World League history. 

Alen Sket led all scorers with 22 points, including six points from serves, while Slovenian teammate Matej Kök added 16 points. Alexandre Ferreira led Portugal with 18 points.

Slovenia dominated the first set, even though Slovenia's coach decided to play with fresh faces from the bench. They were full of enthusiasm and rewarded their coach by easily winning the set 25-16. 

In the second set, Portugal woke up and Valdir Sequeira hit a number of attacks, but faults on defense and reception gave a lot points to their opponent and the set 25-21. 






Both teams maintained a high level of intensity in the third set and played point-by-point before Portugal took a two-point advantage,  which they maintained throughout the set thanks to aggressive attacks from Alexandre Ferreira to end the set 25-23. 


In the fourth set, both teams were playing really well but Slovenia had a slight advantage, 8-6, at the first technical timeout. Portugal tried to come back, but Slovenian's players didn't give them any chance, and the set ended at 25-19.
