Local authorities and Spain national team representatives attended the official presentation of the World League at the town hall of Barcelona
Barcelona, Spain, May 31, 2017 – Spain coach Fernando Munoz is thrilled that his team will have an opportunity to play the FIVB Volleyball World League in Barcelona.
“The team is very motivated because we managed to achieve good results in the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship qualification tournament last week,” Munoz said. “Also, we have the opportunity to play again in Barcelona, which is extremely important for us. We played here a few years ago for the CEV European League, but to come back here for the World League is a great incentive for us.”
Barcelona will host the World League Group 3 matches in Pool A3 and the anticipated event was presented on Wednesday in the Spanish city.

Local authorities and Spain national team representatives attended the official presentation of the World League at the town hall of Barcelona. The matches will be held in Pavello de la Vall DHebron Sports Hall from June 2 to 4.
“This tournament is very important for us, mainly because it places our city on the map of international volleyball, but also because it shows that this city has the intention of supporting sports with a lot of potential such as volleyball,” Sports commissioner of the Barcelona city council David Escude said.
Meanwhile, the vice-president of the Spanish Volleyball Federation and president of Catalonia Volleyball Federation Maribel Zamora pointed out that the event this weekend will be a spectacular experience for all because Spain has not played here for so many years.
The last time Barcelona had World League matches was in 1995, when the city hosted one of two matches against Brazil. While 22 years have passed since the last World League match in Barcelona, the clashes of this weekend put an end to nine years of absence of World League in Spain.
“We need the cooperation and encouragement of volleyball fans in order to achieve our goal of finishing the weekend with three victories,” Spain captain Jorge Fernandez said. “Our intention is to qualify for the Final Round of Group 3.”
The World League matches in Barcelona are included in the events of the commemoration of the 25th anniversary celebration of the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games.
