Group by Group, Week by Week
The 2017 edition of the World League will run from June 2 to July 8, 2017. The Preliminary Round will adopt the same format as the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix Preliminary Round with three different venues hosting matches over each of the three weeks of play for groups 1 and 2. In Group 3 the Preliminary Round will be played over two weeks.
Group 1Group 1 features 12 teams. Among them, 11 played in Group 1 in 2016 (Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, France, Iran, Italy, Poland, Russia, Serbia and the USA). They will be joined by 2016 Group 2 winners Canada. The 2017 Group 1 Finals will take place in Curitiba, Brazil from July 4 to 8.
Group 2Group 2 will also feature 12 teams – 10 ranked 14th to 23rd in the 2016 edition. The 10 teams competing in Group 2 in 2016 (China, Czech Republic, Egypt, Finland, Japan, Korea, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia and Turkey) have been joined by 2016 Group 3 winners Slovenia and Australia, who finished 12th in Group 1 in 2016. The Group 2 Finals will take place in Gold Coast, Australia on June 24 and 25.
Group 3Group 3 also features 12 teams (Chinese Taipei, Germany, Greece, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Montenegro, Qatar, Spain, Tunisia, and Venezuela joined by Estonia and Austria). The Group 3 Preliminary Round will be played over two weekends in four-team pools, with the top 3 of the combined standings joining the hosts for a Final Four from June 16-18 in Leon, Mexico.
