Team profile

Tunisia

Tunisia will be competing in the FIVB World League for the fourth time this year, since they joined Group 3 of the competition in 2014. In their debut season the managed only one win. It was the same in 2015, when they only beat Puerto Rico. But last year, when they hosted a pool again in Tunis, they managed to defeat all three of their opponents Mexico, Montenegro and Venezuela – finishing 8th in Group 3 and 29th overall.

Tunisia have competed six times in the Olympic Games, their best finish being ninth in Los Angeles 1984, when they scored their first and only Olympic win, 3-2 over Egypt. Their latest Olympic appearance was in London 2012, where they ranked joint 11th. They have also appeared at every FIVB Volleyball World Championship since 2002. Their best ranking in the competition was 18th in 1974. Their FIVB World Cup performances haven been consistent in recent outings, having finished 12th in 1995, 1999, 2007 and 2015.

At a continental level, Tunisia have won a medal at each African Championship in which they have competed, apart from in 2009 when they finished fifth. Most recently they claimed silver in 2015. Tunisia also have a sole gold in the All-Africa Games of 1978.

Antonio Giacobbe

Antonio Giacobbe

Seventy-year-old Italian Antonio Giacobbe returns to Tunisia to lead the men’s national team this season, following stints in the 1990s and 2000s. Giacobbe remains in North Africa, after having previously coached the men’s national teams of Morocco and Egypt. He replaces Fethi Mkaouar at the helm of Tunisia. Before moving to Tunisia, Giacobbe worked in Italy, including as head coach of the Italian women’s national team in the early 1980s.
