Chinese Taipei are one of the two Asian teams that made their FIVB World League debut in 2016. They immediately created a stir in Group 3, qualifying for the Final Four in Frankfurt, only to lose their semifinal 3-0 to hosts Germany and the bronze medal match 3-1 to Greece.
They have only once competed in the FIVB World Championship, ranking 15th in 1986.
Chinese Taipei enjoyed a better fate at the Asian Games, claiming a bronze medal in their first outing in 1998 in Bangkok, after defeating Japan 3-2 in the third-place playoff. They have taken part in the competition four times since, but have not managed to get on the podium again.
They had previously also won a bronze medal competing as the Republic of China at the 1970 Asian Games in Bangkok. Chinese Taipei have never been on the podium of the Asian Championships but came close twice, when they finished fourth in 1983 and 1997.
