Montenegro gained the right to take part in the FIVB World League for the first time (since becoming an independent nation in 2006) in 2015, following their European League win the previous year. It was following their European League win the previous year. It was their first gold medal in a major international competition.
Historically they had been part of former Yugoslavia and later Serbia & Montenegro.
Right away Montenegro qualified for the Final Four of Group 3 in 2015 in Bratislava, Slovakia and beat China 3-1 in the semifinals, only to miss out on promotion to Group 2 in a tie-break to Egypt in the final. Last year Montenegro narrowly missed qualifying again for the Group 3 finals when they tied in pool play with Chinese Taipei on 4-2 records and 12 points, but were eliminated on set ratio.
Montenegro have not managed to qualify for either the FIVB World Championships (in one attempt) or the European Championships (in five tries). In addition to their European League gold medal in 2014, they also have a fifth place ranking in the competition from a year earlier.
