Overview

Team profile

Portugal

Portugal have been a regular feature of the FIVB World League over the last five years. In 2015 and 2016, however, they finished bottom of the table in Group 2. Last year they did take part in the finals of the Group as hosts, defeating the Netherlands 3-1 in the semifinals but losing to Canada 3-0 in the final.
The Portuguese team did not qualify for the 2014 FIVB World Championship – their best ever ranking in the competition remaining a fourth place in the inaugural edition of 1948 among six participants in a roundrobin pool.
The Portuguese first qualified for the World League in 1999. The team’s best performance to date in the competition was the fifth place they achieved in 2005.
In 2007, Portugal hosted the Final Four of the European League and the team came close to claiming a first international trophy before losing 3-2 in a dramatic final against Spain. They broke their duck in 2010 when they took the gold medal at the European League in Spain. They have yet to qualify for an Olympic Games.

Hugo Silva

Hugo Silva returns to the helm of the Portuguese men’s national team in 2017, replacing Francisco Santos. In 2014 he led Portugal to fifth place in Group 2 of FIVB World League – a great improvement on their 17th-place finish in 2013, Silva’s first year in charge. Previously he was an assistant coach of the team from 2005 to July 2013, helping them win the 2010 European League gold. At club level, Silva was on the coaching staff of Portuguese club SC Espinho from 2011 to 2013. The team won two Portuguese league titles and a Cup of Portugal in that time.
