Berlin teammates Ter Maat & Carroll top World League Group 2 scoring stats

 

Wouter Ter Maat of the Netherlands was top scorer of Group 2 in the 2017 FIVB World League.

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 27, 2017 - Although it took him three rounds of play to get established in the Netherlands' starting lineup, Wouter Ter Maat topped the scorers ranking in Group 2 of the 2017 FIVB World League scoring 176 points in 11 matches, holding off the advances of Australia's Paul Carroll who finished the competition at 173.



The two opposites, 26-year-old Ter Maat and 31-year-old Carroll were teammates in Germany's Berlin Recycling Volleys, leading the side to the Bundesliga title and the European Champions League Final Four in 2017.

China's Chuan Jiang, who was one of only two players across all Groups in pool play to have broken the 30-point mark in a single match (with 32 against Turkey) was third in the Group 2 scorers ranking with a total of 164 in 9 matches.

Providing a more diversified scoring team, which was crucial to leading them to the Group 2 title, Slovenia had three players amongst the top ten scorers: outside hitter and captain Tine Urnaut in fourth place with 152, opposite Mitja Gasparini in seventh with 141 and the other outside hitter Klemen Cebulj in ninth with 132.



Ter Maat scored off 149 attacks, 15 blocks and 12 aces, while Carroll had 156 kills, 10 stuffs and 7 aces.

But Ter Maat was only third in attacking efficiency with 149 kills in 274 swings for 54.38 per cent. He was bettered by Nathan Roberts of Australia (114/206 for 55.34 per cent) and Masahiro Yanagida of Japan (112/204 for 54.90 per cent).

Finland's Tommi Siirila and Slovakia's Peter Ondrovic shared top place in the Best Blockers ranking with .77 per set - though in absolute numbers the 23-year-old Finn had 27 stuffs, 24 from the 22-year-old Slovak.



Best server of the competition was 25-year-old outside hitter Yanagida, who served 23 aces in 188 serves in his teams's 11 matches: That's .49 aces per set played.
