Well-balanced Venezuela edge Greece in D3 opener

Tallinn, Estonia, June 9, 2017. Venezuela grabbed a quite comfortable 3-0 (25-20, 29-27, 25-16) victory over Greece in the opener of 2017 FIVB World League Group three Pool D.

South American showed well-balanced attacking when three of their players netted double digit points. Top scorer was Alexander Emerson Rodriguez Gonzalez with 12 points, both Fernando Gonzalez and Alberto Edson Valencia Gonzalez added 11. On the other side of the net main attacker was Rafail Koumentakis with 15 points.



Although Greece opened the match with three quick points, Venezuela shortly levelled the score in 4-4. After an ace from Ronald Jose Fayola Hurtado they had a comfortable 13-8 lead. Although Greece tried to reduce the gap their efforts were unprofitable and Venezuela netted the first one with 25-20 edge.



In the second one Greece grabbed 10-8 lead but then Venezuela showed and impressive defensive play and made a 6-0 spurt. But this time it wasn´t a victory yet. Consecutive spikes from Sotirios Sotirou and Rafail Koumentakis made the deficit 18-20 to an 21-20 lead. Greece also had a set-ball in the score 24-23 but could not capitalize it. In the end it was Fernando Gonzalez and Alexander Emerson Rodriguez Gonzalez who gave Venezuela the needed two-point edge.

In the third set Venezuela grabbed a quick 4-1 lead and never gave it away. By the second technical time-out the were ahead 16-10 and ended the match with 25-16 victory after an ace from José Verdi.
