Spain ready to host World League for first time in nine years

Jorge Fernandez spikes in last year's World League

Barcelona, Spain, May 31, 2017 - Volleyball fans in Spain have been looking forward to this moment for over nine years. Spain will host its first FIVB Volleyball World League matches since 2008 when Group 3 Pool A3 takes places in Barcelona this weekend. The teams of Greece, Mexico, Qatar and hosts Spain will clash in three thrilling days of competition with the qualification for the Group 3 Final Round on their minds.

“This year we are really looking forward to the World League, we are very optimistic about it. I think we really have an opportunity to qualify for the finals after many years of getting so close to reaching the last stage,” said Spanish captain Jorge Fernandez.

“It is very important for us to play at home. I think it will help us a lot in our intentions of succeeding at the tournament this year,” added the middle-blocker.

The matches to be held this weekend at the Pavello de la Vall d’Hebrón sports hall in Barcelona will put an end to a nine-year absence of World League in Spain. The last time that the Iberian country hosted a leg was in 2008, when the cities of Valladolid, Pinto and Madrid acted as venues of the event. To mark such a historic moment for Spanish Volleyball, representatives of the national team have appealed to fans to attend the matches this weekend.

“To all volleyball fans I say go to Vall d’Hebron sports hall this weekend to support us. Together we are stronger and only together we can succeed”, said Fernandez.

The Spanish team enters the competition confidently after finishing the FIVB Volleyball World Championship qualification tournament in the Czech Republic in second place last weekend, thus earning a ticket to the third and last round of qualifiers for next year's event.

“I think we have a great opportunity here. Playing in front of our fans will be great for us and I hope that we can get the three victories so we can set the course to the Final Round. We are playing at a good level, we are a young team and we are really looking forward to it,” said  wing-spiker Sergio Noda.

The competition is scheduled to start on Friday, June 2 with Qatar v Greece and Spain v Mexico.
