Wing-spiker Sergio Noda headed the offensive actions of hosts as Qatar focused their playing system in their middleblockers’ efficiency in the thrilling and disputed first set. With 21-21 in the scoreboard at the end of the period, a four-point run by the local side with Noda in stellar mode was all that Spain needed to achieve the 25-21 and 1-0.

Qatar intensified their pressure with the serve to create problems to their rivals’ distribution. The strong hits from the serving line together with the middleblockers’ contribution gave Asians the lead in the set (12-16). As the set progressed, the differences grew for the visiting side. Despite saving six set balls, Spain could not help that Qatar took the set with a spike by Diagne Papemaguette (21-25 and 1-1).

A starting 5-1 at the onset of the third period gave locals a clear lead. Fran Ruiz stepped forward, and the 1.78 meters-tall player contributed in attack and serve to place Spain in the path to winning the period. Little could Qatar do to alter the situation and Spain finished the set with a conclusive 25-15.

As fans filling up the stands in Pavello de Vall dHebron sports hall continued showing their support for their team, Spain regained the command of the match with a convincing lead 16-10. The actions finished by Andres Villena paved the way for Spaniards’ victory as the spikes by the opposite player clearly found the other side of the net. The differences grew bigger and bigger for hosts, and the domination of the local side was confirmed when an ace serve by star Sergio Noda and an attacking mistake by Qatar represented the clear 25-13 and the final 3-1 for the hosts.
