Slovenian setter had right solutions at the right time - Vermeulen

Dejan Vincic sets up Alen Pajenk for a clean spike through the Dutch blockers

Gold Coast, Australia, June 24, 2017 – The Netherlands coach Gido Vermeulen commended the playmaking skills of setter from the opposing side, Dejan Vincic, who directed Slovenia to a straight-set win in the first semifinal match of the 2017 FIVB Volleyball World League Group 2 Finals.

“I want to congratulate Slovenia because they played a great first set. In the second set, we started fighting and we knew that we had to bring them to the edge, but we were not ready. In the third set, we tried to change everything but they still kept the game under control. Their setter played very well as he made some good combinations. He didn’t play before and he gave the right solutions at the right time for Slovenia.”

Slovenia coach Slobodan Kovac: “Our plan was to really do well on service and after that on block. In this match we also played well on reception, but I think we won because we were mentally tough.”

Slovenia captain Tine Urnaut: “Our setter played very well. He was able to give us good plays and organised our offence very well. We played very focused and we had good reception, but it was also our block-defence that put us through the first and second set. Then we had great counter-attacks in the third set.”

Netherlands captain Jasper Diefenbach: “We couldn’t get into our rhythm. Slovenia put pressure on us from the beginning. I want to congratulate them on their great performance today. We should analyse what went wrong in this match. We went up against a very strong team today and they really wanted to win.”
