The Hague to host combined World Tour and World League events in 2017

The Hague will host volleyball and beach volleyball in June

Lausanne, Switzerland, December 24, 2016 - The Netherlands Volleyball Federation has done it again and pulled off another innovative volleyball experience. From June 15 to 18, 2017 the Dutch city of The Hague will be the venue for a unique volleyball and beach volleyball event. The brand new Sportcampus Zuiderpark venue will host an FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour event alongside the FIVB Volleyball World League. It is the first time these two tournaments will be played simultaneously at the same venue.

The construction of the Sportcampus Zuiderpark multifunctional sports and education center is currently reaching completion. The combined World Tour and World League event in June will be the first international sports event to take place at the new venue.

FIVB President Dr. Ary Graça F° said: "Following the outstanding FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships in 2015, the Netherlands Volleyball Federation once again continues to innovate and inspire by hosting beach volleyball and volleyball events in a dynamic fashion.

"Innovation and opportunities is the FIVB mantra and this multi sport event next year in The Hague is a perfect example. Having two of the FIVB´s top properties - the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour and the FIVB Volleyball World League - playing together at the same time in The Hague will give volleyball fans a unique chance and environment to experience the best of volleyball and beach volleyball. It surely is an opportunity not to be missed"

World Tour

The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour event in The Hague will be a three-star double gender tournament and joins a FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour 2017 calendar which includes a total of 25 events, including five three-star tournaments, and features single gender events in Kish Island and Espinho (men) and in Sydney, Daegu, Ulsan and Monaco (women).  The remaining 19 events are double gender.

From June 15-18, a temporary outdoor beach volleyball stadium will be set up on the premises of the Sportcampus Zuiderpark for the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour event. An FIVB beach volleyball event last visited The Hague in 2015, when four cities in the Netherlands hosted the 2015 edition of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships.

Sportcampus Zuiderpark is the new training location for the federation's beach volleyball  programme, which will make the event very special for the Dutch teams participating in the event.

"It is extremely cool to play a World Tour event in our own town again," said Alexander Brouwer, who won bronze at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games with Robert Meeuwsen. "At the World Championships in 2015 we were eliminated sooner than expected. This gives us the chance to show ourselves to the Dutch audience again."

World League

The World League is the FIVB's top annual event for men's national teams and it has been organised since 1990. The Netherlands have participated in 20 of the previous 27 editions and conquered three medals: gold (1996), silver (1990) and bronze (1998).

In 2017, the Dutch men's team led by coach Gido Vermeulen will play nine pool matches over three weekends. The second weekend will take place from June 16-18 in The Hague. The matches will be played in the brand new sports hall at the Sportcampus Zuiderpark, which can accommodate up to 3000 spectators. The Dutch will face Korea, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

"For us, it's always an experience to play in front of our own audience," said Jasper Diefenbach, captain of the Dutch men's team. "I've never played in The Hague before, so I'm looking forward to this! I like the idea of combining both volleyball and beach volleyball in one event. The last few years the sport of volleyball has been put in the spotlight again. I'm confident that this event will be fantastic."

The combination of the FIVB World Tour and World League will offer sports fans a unique opportunity to enjoy volleyball and beach volleyball at the highest level. By purchasing a combined ticket, fans will be able to follow both tournaments.

The volleyball and beach volleyball schedules will be conceived to maximise the audience and the FIVB will approve the detailed program before ticket sales start on February 1, 2017. For more information, visit the Nevobo website.
