Fukatsu aims for Group 2 final triumph

Japan are aiming to finish on top of the FIVB Volleyball World League Group 2 as they face Slovenia in the final at Gold Coast

Gold Coast, Australia, June 24, 2017 – Japan captain Hideomi Fukatsu has one goal in mind – to win their final match against in the 2017 FIVB Volleyball World League Group 2.

“In the first set we led in the game but we were defeated. In the next two sets we prevailed although it was not very easy to win the second set. Our teamwork pulled us through in that set. We have one more match to win. That is our goal and is what we are going to work on tomorrow. We know that the Australian block was very tough; but we have to be more aggressive against Slovenia because they are also a tough team.”

Japan coach Yuichi Nakagaichi: “We did not have a great condition in this match, plus this is an away match. However, we made a good result today.”

Australia coach Mark Lebedew: “It was a great match today, with great atmosphere here in the gym. We were a little bit up and down on both sides, but I think we really fought really hard to come back after two sets that weren’t really good. The team had great spirit and willingness to fight. We ended up being unlucky, but we played a great game today. I am really proud of the guys and the way they stuck with it in difficult moments. It will be good for us as we go into the future.”

Australia captain Paul Carroll: “It’s pretty disappointing after beating Japan in China last week. We had very good confidence but they made some good plays. This match could have gone either way, but it was disappointing that we couldn’t win it in front of the home crowd.”
