Best Players - USA’s Patch sets personal scoring mark in win against Iran

 

Benjamin Patch of the United States led USA to its third victory in the FIVB Volleyball World League, as he scored 24 points against Iran

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 16, 2017 – USA opposite spiker Benjamin Patch continues to thrive in the FIVB Volleyball World League after setting his personal best in the competition with 24 points on Thursday, in their straight-set win over Iran at Hala Sportowa Spodek in Katowice.



The rookie continues his successful campaign as he turned out again to be the USA’s top scoring performer. His 24 markers against Iran came from 21 spikes and three solid blocks, putting him on top of the best scorer category ahead of Stephen Boyer of France and Dawid Konarski of Poland.

World League

He led USA in the scoring department in five out of seven matches in the World League, including their Thursday night win over Iran and their second week triumphs over Russia on June 10 and Italy on June 11. He now has collected a total of 112 points.

Patch’s scoring exploits did not only put him on top of the scoring charts in Group 1, but also kept USA’s hopes alive in reaching the Final Six, which will take place in Curitiba from July 4 to 8.



Patch has been in the USA Volleyball programme since 2011, starting with the youth national team. The following year, he won the Most Valuable Player plum in the NORCECA Men’s U21 Continental Championship as he spearheaded his team to win the title. He also played in USA’s Pan American Games and Pan American Cup teams.


Meanwhile, France’s Boyer and Poland’s Konarski are trailing Patch’s scoring mark in Group 1. Boyer scored 106 points in six matches, while Konarski recorded 105 points in seven matches. Russia’s Maxim Zhigalov and USA’s Taylor Sander round up the top scorers in the group with 102 and 101 point-outputs, respectively.

USA are one of the two countries with two players in the top 10 scorers in Group 1 – Patch and Sander. The other pair is from Iran – Amir Ghafour and Milad Ebadipour.

As the top scorer in Group 1, Patch also shines in the spiking department. The American is the third best spiker in the group with a flat 55 per cent success rate. However, Julien Lyneel of France is still the best spiker with a 58.89 success rate. Evandro Guerra of Brazil is second with a 57.27 attack percentage.

World League

Dmitry Volkov’s five aces in their straight-set win against Poland made him the best server in Group 1. Volkov has accumulated 15 aces in seven matches and averaged 0.56 aces per set. France’s Boyer and Brazil’s Ricardo Lucarelli are the second and third best servers, respectively.

The Europeans players are dominating the net in Group 1, with Nikolay Nikolov of Bulgaria topping the best blocker list with 19 stuff blocks. Ilia Vlasov also had 19 blocks, but Nikolov edged his average of 0.70 blocks per set with a higher average of 0.86. Srecko Lisinac of Serbia is third with 0.67 blocks per set.

Iranian playmaker Mir Saeid Marouflakrani has overtaken Bruno Rezende of Brazil as the group’s best setter. Marouf’s brilliant playmaking skills gave him an average of 5.39 per set. Canada’s Tyler Sanders is the third best setter.

Canadian libero Blair Cameron Bann is still the best digger, Brazilian Thales Hoss outshined his team-mate Mauricio Silva as the best receiver in Group 1.

In Group 2, Wouter Ter Maat of the Netherlands reigned as Group 2’s best scorer. The Dutchman tallied 101 points, including 88 spikes, seven blocks and six aces. Ter Maat’s great scoring performance put his team in second place overall after two weeks with a 4-2 win-loss record. China’s Chuan Jiang is the second best scorer with a total of 100 points, but his scoring efforts could not help lift China as they are 10th in Group 2 with a 2-4 win-loss card.

World League

Japan improved their record in Group 2, following their brilliant stint in their turf in Takasaki. Masahiro Yanagida’s efforts from the attack line have certainly something to do with this rise by the Japanese team. The Japanese outside hitter is now the group’s best spiker with a very high 60.58 success rate. Australia’s Nathan Roberts is also an efficient hitter with 59.83, which puts him on the second spot.

Yanagida is also Group 2’s best server scoring 12 aces in their six matches. Ahmed Abdelhay of Egypt is still the top servers in the group as he stays second to Yanagida.

In Group 3, Tunisia's Hamza Nagga owned the top spot in the Group 3 best scorer list. The Tunisian outside spiker recorded 84 points, 15 blocks and five aces; while Austria's Alexander Berger and Paul Buchegger registered 99 and 90 points, respectively.

However, the three will not be able to improve on their scoring marks as they have exited the Group 3 competition. Therefore, Spain’s Andres Villena, Germany’s Simon Hirsch and Mexico’s Jorge Barajas will have an opportunity to improve on their scoring marks, as their teams made it to the Group 3 finals. The three players are ranked 4th to 6th in the scoring category.
