Best Players - Slovakia’s Peter Ondrovic repels nine attacks to spearhead Saturday’s block party

Slovakia's Peter Ondrovic (centre) was the best blocker on Saturday with nine stuff blocks - the best block output so far in the tournament

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 11, 2017 – Slovakian middle blocker Peter Ondrovic had a colossal presence at the net against China, as he blocked nine attacks to help his team win in four sets on Saturday in their Pool D2 encounter in Helsinki in the 2017 FIVB Volleyball World League.

World League

Ondrovic bested all blockers in the three groups, as recorded the most blocks in the tournament so far, putting him in second place behind Finland’s Tommi Siirila, who leads with a total of 21 stuff blocks.

In last year's World League, Ondrovic had a total of seven stuff blocks and was No. 61 in Group 2's best blocker list. This year, has already surpassed his personal best with a running total of 16.

Ondrovic’s contribution on blocks and attacks helped Slovakia to reach a new team record of four wins in a single World League edition for the first time, after recording three wins in each of their previous three participations.

World League

The Slovakian middle blocker led a cast of tough net defenders - Canada’s Graham Vigrass, Bulgaria’s Nikolay Nikolov and Belgium’s Simon Van De Voorde - as Saturday’s top blockers. Vigrass, Nikolov and Van De Voorde scored seven blocks each.

Nikolov and Vigrass block outputs on Saturday have positioned them in third and fourth in Group 1’s best blocker list, while Van De Voorde moved up to the top 15. However, Vigrass' squad prevailed 3-1 over Nikolov's team in Varna.

World League

Ilia Vlasov of Russia and Kevin Le Roux of France are on top of the list, with the former having a better average than the latter.

Belgium’s Bram Van Den Dries conquered the top spot in best scorers’ list in Group 1 with a total of 88 points. The Belgian opposite hitter needed only 11 points to overcome Tsvetan Sokolov in the scoring race.

The Bulgarian opposite scored 18 points in their 3-1 loss to Canada, but was outscored by the opposing side’s John Gordon Perrin, who tallied 24 markers. Sokolov is now the third best scorer in Group 1.

Slowly trailing scoring leader Van Den Dries is France’s boy wonder Stephen Boyer, who accumulated 87 points in the undefeated run. Boyer is also the best server in the group.

Frenchman Julien Lyneel is tough as nails in the best spiker category, as he remains on top of the list with a 62.5 per cent success rate, with Brazil's Evandro Guerra and Serbia's Marko Ivovic in second and third positions, respectively. These three ranked players are significantly providing their squads with the winning advantage, as their statistics speak for their team’s current standing in the group.

Brazilian setter Bruno Rezende is setting flawlessly and is still on top of the best setter category with 5.54 average by set.

Canadian libero Blair Cameron Bann is still the best digger and Mauricio Silva still holds the best receiver in Group 1.

In Group 2, Siirila and Ondrovic are steady in the top two spots, respectively, followed by silent operators Filip Sveticanin of Portugal and Alen Pajenk of Slovenia in the list of best blockers. Sveticanin has a 0.68 average blocks per set, while Pajenk has a 0.59 average.

World League

China’s Chuan Jiang only scored one point in their match against Slovakia, but it was enough to hit the 100-mark and remain as the best scorer in the group and in the tournament.

Nathan Roberts and Paul Carroll are tied in third as best scorer, which explains Australia’s sweep of the matches in Helsinki. Roberts, who has shown consistency in the tournament, topped the best spiker category in Group 2.

Like Roberts, Japan’s Naonobu Fujii is the best setter in the group, as he has been dishing out excellent sets, which resulted to two straight victories in Takasaki.

In Group 3, Cuk Bozidar of Montenegro remain as the best blocker with a 0.74 average, while Tim Broshog of Germany is at second place with a 0.67 average.

World League

Hamza Nagga’s 25 points lifted him to the top position in the scoring category ahead of Alexander Berger of Austria. Nagga led Tunisia’s 3-2 win against Chinese Taipei, with 21 attacks and an ace, plus three blocks that contributed to the team’s total block output of 16.

Berger, on the other hand, is the more efficient hitter, as he topped the best spiker list in the group with a success rate of 60.53 per cent.
