Ondrovic helps Slovakia prevail over Australia

 

Poprad, Slovakia, 3 Jun, 2017 - A confident performance and 15 points from Peter Ondrovic anchored Slovakia in their four-set victory over Australia on Saturday.

Australia's Lincoln Alexander Williams and Luke Smith scored 19 and 14 points, respectively, but despite their best efforts the visiting team only managed to clinch one set in the match.

Slovakia started well and lea 7-3 at the beginning. Wing-spiker Matej Patak hit an ace and it was 12-6 for the home team. Slovakia played very effectively in attack and Peter Mlynarcik put his team to lead 16-10. Then Australia bettered the service and caused problems for Slovaks in reception. "Voleyroos" closed the score to one point (17-18), but Slovaks finally won first set 25-22 when captain Emanuel Kohut hit an ace.






Australia started better in the second set and led 6-4 and 14-11 after a nice spike by Samuel Walker. Slovakians were under the pressure and made mistakes, but then thanks to captain Kohut closed the score to 20-21. Australia finally managed to win the set 25-21 and level the score.




Slovakia led in the third set 16-12 and later 22-17 when Marcel Lux hit an ace. But Australia came back when Lincoln Alexander Williams showed fantastic service and the guests levelled the score at 22-22. Both teams then shared setballs and Slovakia finally won it in noisy building 30-28 when Milan Bencz finished the play.



 

Australia led 9-5 in fourth set thanks to very good net defence. But Slovakia turned the score and thanks to great support by their fans finally won 25-22 and collected their next three points in this tournament.
