Estonia kick off quest for 2018 Worlds with friendly win

 

Portugal and Estonia men's National Teams in the Town Hall of Vila Flor ahead of their firendly games in preparation for the 2018 FIVB World Championship qualifiers.

Lausanne, Switzerland, May 11, 2017 - Oliver Venno scored 20 points and led Estonia to a 3-1 (25-22, 25-18, 20-25, 25-23) win over Portugal in the first of a series of three friendly games in Vila Flor as both sides prepare for the 2018 FIVB Men's World Championship qualifiers and the 2017 FIVB World League.



Valdir Sequeira was best scorer of Portugal with 18 points. The home side was slightly better in all skills, but conceded as many as 40 unforced errors (to Estonia's 29).

Portugal play in Ljubljana, up against hosts Slovenia, Belgium, Georgia, Israel and Latvia as the Round 2 of the European qualifiers begin on 24 May in six pools across the continent.

In Tallinn Estonia host Montenegro, Russia, Romania, Hungary and Kosovo.

The top team from each of the pools advances to the 2018 FIVB World Championships which will be jointly hosted by Italy and Bulgaria. The second-ranked teams of each European pool continue in Round 3 for one more ticket to the World Championship.

In the World League Portugal are in Group 2, set to play pools in Slovakia, the Czech RepublicRepublic and Egypt.

Estonia are making their World League debut this year and will play in a Group 3 pools in Montenegro before hosting Greece, Vezuela and Qatar in Tallinn.

Portugal will host Estonia for two more friendlies on Friday and Saturday.
